How to Spot When a Diet is Turning into Something Harmful
Jul 17, 2025
Not every “healthy” diet is actually healthy. As trainers, we often see clients chasing “health” goals. But sometimes, what looks like discipline could be a deeper struggle. Here’s what to watch for...
The Grey Zone: Dieting vs disordered eating.
Not all restrictive eating is harmless. Dieting exists on a spectrum and when combined with shame, fear, or compulsion, it can signal something more serious.
Physical red flags you might notice:
- Rapid or extreme weight loss
- Loss of strength, energy, or period
- Increased injury or slow recovery
- Obsession with “clean” eating
- Avoidance of social situations involving food
What they might say:
- “I’m scared of eating carbs.”
- “I can’t skip a workout or I feel guilty.”
- “I’m doing 3 shakes a day.”
- “I’ve already eaten too much today, I won’t eat dinner.”
These aren’t just choices; they may be warning signs.
Don’t ignore the warning signs. Disordered eating doesn’t have a “look.” Mums of all sizes can be struggling silently. It’s about the behaviours and thoughts, not just the food.
